Merhaba!
Alanya is a small town
(aprox.120 000 inhabitants) in the South of Turkey. From the north
Alanya is encircled by the Taurus Mountains and from the south by
Mediterranean Sea. Almost the whole year round you can swim in the warm
sea. There are sunny days all tourist season, which lasts from May until
October. The beach of hot sand extending to the
north-west of Alanya castle bears the name of the Egyptian queen,
Cleopatra.
Alanya
has grown considerably in the past 20 years. New hotels and apartment
blocks line the broad, elegant boulevards running along the sandy
beaches stretching on either side of the town. During summer the
population nearly doubles and the town turns into a lively colony of
predominantly foreign tourists.
Alanya is
a popular place for German, Scandinavian, Russian and Hollander tourists who buy one or
two week package to relax by the pool, or the beach in daytime and crowd
the bars at night. It has a very busy marketplace, shopping area as well.
The
name
The first name of Alanya was Korakesium. In Byzantium they gave
Alanya the name Kalanoros (which means beautiful mountain). During
the monarchy of Anatolian Seljuks in the 13th century Alaaddin
Keykubat (1220-1237) took over the castle and changed the name into
Alaiye (Ala's town, name derived from Alaaddin). Then when Atatürk
visited this town in 1935 he named it Alanya.
